Keeping the Momentum

by | Aug 1, 2026 | Inclusive Policy Postcards

As we begin August, the work of building strong public schools continues in classrooms, courtrooms, school board meetings, and communities across Arizona. This week, we’re following the latest developments in education policy while highlighting the importance of staying informed and engaged long after the headlines fade.

Thank you for being part of this community and for continuing to follow the issues shaping Arizona’s public schools.

Arizona Legislative & Education Policy Update 🌵

A Maricopa County judge ruled this week that a proposed constitutional amendment backed by Republican lawmakers cannot appear on the November ballot. The measure would have made it significantly more difficult for future legislatures to change or limit Arizona’s Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) voucher program. The court found the proposal violated Arizona’s constitutional requirement that ballot measures address only a single subject. The ruling is expected to be appealed, meaning the future of the measure remains uncertain.

School Board And District Updates 🏫

Vail Unified School District

During public comment, a teacher shared a story about a former student who once asked, “What’s wrong with me?” The teacher recalled reassuring the student that there was nothing wrong with the way they learned or experienced the world. Years later, she shared, that same student is now attending Harvard Law School.

Why this matters:

Every student deserves to learn in an environment where they feel supported, respected, and encouraged to reach their full potential. Stories like these remind us that educators play an important role in helping students build confidence and see their strengths, both inside and outside the classroom.

Federal Policy Update 🏛️

The U.S. Department of Education has opened investigations into two school districts over policies involving transgender students and parental notification. Federal officials are examining whether the districts’ practices comply with federal laws governing student records and parental rights. The investigations are the latest in a series of federal actions that could influence how school districts across the country approach student privacy and gender identity policies.

Civic Power Series V.24⚡

Movements Are Bigger Than Moments
Progress doesn’t happen because of one election, one leader, or one headline. It happens because people continue showing up, organizing, asking questions, and advocating for one another, even when the work is difficult or receives little attention.

The strongest movements are rooted in community. They are sustained by people who remain committed to their values and who understand that lasting change comes from listening to those most affected and continuing the work together.

As we begin a new month, let’s remember that civic power isn’t measured by a single moment. It’s built through consistency, courage, and a shared commitment to creating schools where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
